If you compose music or write songs then you hold copyrights to your works and the subsequent use of them.  Publishing your music ensures that all licenses of your copyrights are properly paid for.

Publishing income is generated from three main sources:

• Mechanical royalties - received from record companies when songs are licensed and sold.
• Performance royalties – collected by performing rights societies on behalf of the copyright owners whenever the songs are performed live, played on radio and TV, or heard in public places such as hotels, bars and theatres.
• Synchronisation licenses – negotiated when music is used in synchronisation with moving images such as in film, television, advertising, computer games and other multimedia.
