What is Music Publishing?

If you compose music or write songs then you hold copyrights to your works and the subsequent use of them.  Publishing your music ensures that all licenses of your copyrights are properly paid for.  There are two types of copyright involved in music; the sound recording copyright and the songwriting copyright.  Typically a record company will sign the sound recording copyright and the songwriting copyright remains with the songwriter or composer.  Publishing your music ensures that uses of the songwriting copyrights are paid for.

Publishing income is generated from three main sources:

  • Mechanical royalties - received from record companies when songs are licensed and sold and from download stores when songs are sold.
  • Performance royalties – collected by performing rights societies on behalf of the copyright owners whenever the songs are performed live, played on radio and TV, streamed online, or heard in public places such as hotels, bars and theatres.
  • Synchronisation licenses – negotiated when music is used in synchronisation with moving images such as in film, television, advertising, computer games and other multimedia.

Kahua, as a music publisher, has specialist knowledge to efficiently collect the royalties due for the use of copyrights and will also seek out further opportunities to generate income from compositions.  Our experience within the industry means that we have the necessary contacts to to promote songs, writers and artists and attempt to license copyrights and develop songwriters' careers.
