Kahua is a music company based in the north-east of England and is headed up by Ian Straker.  Born in 1979, Ian graduated from Loughbrough University in 2006 with a BSc and PhD.  While at university Ian became involved with the university radio station where he worked as Head of Dance Music and also organised several events including ‘World DJ Fund 2003’, for which he received the Student Union’s ‘Outstanding Volunteer of the Year’ award.  Ian set up Kahua Music as a record store with Daniel Sudron in 2005 and after graduating moved back to the North-East where Kahua is now based.  Kahua's promotion and publishing sections were formed in early 2008. 

Ian is also label manager and A&R for Lost My Dog Records, which was set up in Spring 2005 with partners Peter Morgan and Najan Ward.  Lost My Dog is a well respected label releasing records which range in style from deep to tech house and taking in elements of soulful, jacking and acid house.  Lost My Dog has received support from the most influential magazines including iDJ and DJ Mag, leading radio stations such as Radio 1, Dinamo FM and Ministry of Sound, and is regularly in the boxes/CD wallets/laptops of the world’s leading club DJs.

Kahua provides specialist services in the areas of promotion and publishing, alongside an online vinyl and CD retail site.  Kahua specialises in dance music with a specific focus on underground house.

Music Promotions
In the area of music promotions Kahua provides tastemaker services to record labels releasing house music.  Kahua works to promote music to club DJs, specialist radio and specialist press. 

Music Publishing
In the area of publishing, Kahua is regiustered as a limited company under the name Kahua Music Publishing Ltd and began offering publishing services to artists in May 2008.  We work with songwriters, predominantly in the house music scene to collect royalties due from the use of their copyrights and to find further uses for their works, for example through synchronisation licences to TV and film producers, advertisers and computer game developers.

Retail
The retail site kahuamusic.com was founded in June 2005 and ‘Kahua Music’ also existed as a record shop in Middlesbrough until March 2008 when operations were moved online.  The site specialises in house music in the deep, tech, jacking, soulful, funky and electro house genres.  In May 2008 kahuamusic.com was awarded ‘Best Music Site’ and ‘Best E-Commerce Site’ at the North East Digital Awards.  As well as the main website, Kahua Music has a presence on Discogs, Ebay, GEMM, Music Street, Netsoundsmusic and Amazon.

Business Development
Kahua also offers business development services through independent  consultancy on all aspects of the dance music industry including marketing and promotions, publishing, retail, record labels, contracts and deals.
